Summer Is Coming

by erin on May 27, 2015

Anyone ever watch Game of Thrones?  Who am I kidding?!  I know there’s a bunch of people out there who know all about the different houses in that show, and their mottos.  Especially the Stark motto:  Winter Is Coming.  I can sympathize.  Except instead of fearing the snows that are deep enough to bury houses and freeze the tears on peasants’ cheeks (gasp), I am staring into the gaping maw of SUMMER.

With children home all day, every day, uncaring of Mom who is still taking her first summer class ever (I am SO not amused), needing to eat every four seconds like hummingbirds on steroids, and they-will-be-here-all-day-and-what-the-heck-are-we-g0nna-do-all-day?!?!?  Let alone getting that thing I vaguely recall as exercise, peace, and uninterrupted time in the bathroom.  Let alone all the knitting my hands and brain want to do.  I want to knit so much stuff right now.  RIGHT NOW.

My daughter has already wrapped up her first year of preschool, but my son won’t be done until June 12.  I plan to have a few nervous breakdowns between now and then.  I’m writing lists of things to do to combat the dreaded B word (Moooo-ooooom, I’m bored).

In the meantime, there is knitting.

Behold my gorgeous Quicksilver, still chugging along.  Also behold my new (to me) coffee table, and the rug underneath!  All I want to say is that college students around here get rid of the most amazing stuff, and I am happy to haul that stuff home.  Yes, I dumpster dive.  Well, not in the dumpster.  I have standards.  Next to the dumpster, yes.  In it, no.  Rainy day, depends on how rainy and what it is.  Just telling the truth, yo.  Doesn’t my shawl look smashing on it?  It may be the only surface in my home that isn’t covered in stuff….yet.  Who am I kidding?  Do you see the stuff starting to accumulate?  It’s already a lost cause.

Here is another project I started:

This is the Ten Stitch Blanket by Frankie Brown.  I have been feeling the pull of this blanket for years, but never seem to have the right yarn for it.  This time I just went for it and decided to make it out of my sizable stash of Plymouth Encore Worsted.  While it is knit in many projects like a squared off spiral, this time I decided to shake it up and make it in concentric squares.  We shall see how it turns out.

I’m also trying to figure out what I can make with this yarn that my daughter gave me doe-eyes over.  She wants a sweater out of this eye blasting combination.  What do you think?

Stripes?  Pink sleeves and collar and orange body?  This project is in the percolating stage, where I do nothing except have it on background compute until something jumps out and hits me.

Also on background compute is this shawl, also by Melanie Berg.  Dark Champagne.  Doesn’t sound like something I want to drink, but I am tempted to tear up my stash and find some sport weight yarn to knit it up with.  What do you think?

Anyone else preparing for the imminent car crash of children plus summer?  How are you coping?
